One thing about pearls is that they somehow always seem to feel either really modern, or completely dull. In the case of this season, it’s the former. With labels from Miu Miu to Dries Van Noten and Gucci showing pearl-adorned fuzzy slides and elegantly embellished heels or loafers, embedded with the shiny extra on the heel, the time has never felt better than to embrace your grandmother’s favorite accessory.
Aside from the statement-making shoes we saw on the Fall 2016 runways, we spotted more street style stars than ever before wearing the tiniest of pearl earrings and bags, subtly covered in them. It may have something to do with fashion’s forever obsession with minimalist jewelry, but we’re feeling ready to embrace the storied trend again.
A tip: the new version of pearls tend to look best either in the form of mega-sized, unexpected accessories (think: Miu Miu’s bauble-like additions to pearl slides, or an oversized clutch shaped like one big pearl) or as dainty, tiny, look-twice-or-you’ll-miss-it pieces of jewelry.
