Here’s something about me: In high school, almost every day I’d wear a fistful of rings on each hand. And they weren’t the dainty, minimalist bands crafted out of shiny silver, either. These were giant metal carved flowers, massive vintage stones, or, my personal favorite, oversized animals covered in rhinestones by Betsey Johnson. I also wore red nail polish every day, no matter what. I got used to the fact that the rings sometimes got in the way of things and loved how people who knew me well wanted to see what combinations I put together on different days.
I eventually outgrew the look before moving to New York for college, and because I wore it so often, I haven’t been able to take on the look since. That is, until I started seeing the same style pop up on runways and in more than a few cool Instagrams. Maximalism is back in fashion—and the stacks of rings I’ve been seeing everywhere exemplify it.
One of the biggest proponents has been—shocker, we know—Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, who himself tends to wear a few different statement rings at once. He’s also styled models with fistfuls of statement rings on the runway. Aureta, a blogger/It-girl whom I’ve been following on Instagram lately, also pulls off the ring stack well, albeit with very, very expensive pieces from Cartier and Bulgari.
I’d forgotten how layering an overload of giant chunky rings—even more than one per finger—is actually kind of fun. It tends to add a quirkiness to even the most basic outfits such as T-shirts and jeans and prompts everyone around you to think you’re a bit of character. In other words, it’s the ultimate conversation starter.
